Raphael The Small Cowper Madonna
▷━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━◁

Raphael's painting [The Small Cowper Madonna] was completed around 1505 in Florence, where he arrived in late 1504. In 1508, Raphael moved to Rome, invited by Pope Julius II, and he remained in Rome for the last 12 years of his life.

In 1500, Raphael became an apprentice to Pietro Perugino (1450-1523).  Although Raphael was heavily influenced by the other two masters of High Renaissance - Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo later in Florence and Rome, his teacher Perugino's infulence was still evident in his early works, including [The Small Cowper Madonna].  Below is Pietro Perugino's [Madonna and Child], also at National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, completed around year 1500.
