French artist Manet's [Argenteuil] was first exhibited at 1875 Paris Salon and it is considered to be one of first paintings of "true impressionism" by Manet.

He spent summer of 1874 in Gennevilliers and visited his friend Claude Monet, who has lived in nearby Argenteuil since 1873.  This painting was done while he was visiting Monet.  Originally, Manet is known to ask Claude Monet and his wife Camille to pose for the painting, but the couple could not hold their poses long enough.  The woman muse within the painting is unknown; however, the man is said to be either Manet’s brother in law Rodolphe Leenhoff, or Manet’s friend Baron Barbier.
