[The Swing] has many points in common with [Dance at Le Moulin de la Galette(Bal du moulin de la galette)]. The two were performed in parallel during the summer of 1876. The models of [The Swing], Edmond, the brother of Pierre Auguste Renoir, the painter Norbert Goeneutte and Jeanne, a young Montmartre, are among the dancers of the Bal . The same carefree atmosphere permeates both paintings. As in the Ball , Renoir mainly sought to translate the effects of the sun that light up the scene, filtered by the leaves. The light vibrations are conveyed by spots of light colors, especially on clothes and the floor. This particularly displeased the critics when the painting was shown at the Impressionist exhibition of 1877. [The Swing] nevertheless found a buyer: it was Gustave Caillebotte, who also bought[Dance at Le Moulin de la Galette(Bal du moulin de la galette)]. (excerpt from Musée d'Orsay, Paris)
