Moulay Abd-er-Rahman, Sultan of Morocco, leaving his palace in Meknes, surrounded by his guard and his main officers. In 1845, Delacroix exhibited at the Salon this large historical canvas, the most monumental work he had produced on the Moroccan subject.
Almost fifteen years after the events, the scene evokes an audience which the painter attended on March 22, 1832, during his trip to Morocco in the company of Charles de Mornay, sent by Louis-Philippe on a diplomatic mission. The mission having ended in failure, the painter contented himself with representing the Sultan in all his splendor. (excerpt from the painting description from Augustins Museum)
