▷━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━◁

This work is part of a core of bourgeois life where the female figure plays a fundamental role in the presentation of a relatively elitist worldliness. Through anonymous models, in patches touched by the sun or shadow, games of repeated iconography are established (parasols, flower beds, clay pots, walls, garden benches).

In an allegedly elegant ambience, on this terrace of Varanda do Grego, Malhoa creates specific chromatic and luminous situations. The transmitted feeling expresses a certain lightness, delicacy and fineness. It is important to note the striking impression of the brushstroke, which, interestingly, is combined with an underlining of the contour of the figures, which is uncommon in his painting, diluted in light games.

Slices of sun stain the floor, causing a feeling of youthfulness and freshness accentuated by the contrast that is established with the strong navy blue. (excerpt of the painting description from Chiado National Museum of Contemporary Art)
