From 1876 to 1877, Homer Watson visited New York City, where he was influenced by the Hudson River School, and in particular, the work of George Inness.

In 1878, when Watson returned to Doon, near Kitchener, Ontario, where he was born.  In 1882, he was elected to full membership in the Royal Canadian Academy with this painting, [Down in the Laurentides].
