Lahey rarely painted beach scenes in her native state, although Queensland's beach culture was developing throughout the 1930s. The north coast was the chosen holiday destination venue for Brisbanites and the south coast for southern visitors. The south coast wasn't officially described as the Gold Coast until 1959.
While she also painted Bribie Island and Caloundra beach scenes, the vivacity, colour and sheer delight in Lahey's portrayal of the bathers and their beach accessories in this work suggest Surfers Paradise as the location. This is the exceptional work in her group of beach scenes. (painting description from Queensland Art Gallery Gallery of Modern Art)
Lahey was also trained by Frederick McCubbin.
